France, Italy lead 1.9% fall in EU new car sales in November 2024

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (Acea) has reported a 1.9% decline in new car registrations in the EU for November 2024, as France experienced the largest drop, with a 12.7% decline, followed by Italy at -10.8%.

Meanwhile, the German market saw minimal change, with a slight increase of 0.5%.

Among the four largest EU markets, only Spain saw positive growth, with an increase of 6.4%.

In November 2024, the market share of battery-electric cars decreased to 15%, down from 16.3% the previous year, while volumes saw a decline of 9.5%.

Registrations of plug-in hybrid cars also dropped by 8.8% in November 2024. The market share for these vehicles stood at 7.6%, reflecting a decrease of 0.6 percentage points compared to the same month in 2023.

Battery-electric car registrations fell by 9.5%, totalling 130,757 units. This decline was mainly driven by substantial drops in Germany (-21.8%) and France (-24.4%) during last month.

This has led to a 5.4% fall in year-to-date market volume compared to the same period a year earlier, with the total market share currently standing at 13.4%.

In November 2024, the plug-in hybrid car registrations dropped by 8.8%, following sharp declines in France (-19.6%), Belgium (-61.4%), and Italy (-31.4%).

Plug-in hybrids constituted 7.6% of the car market in November 2024, down from 8.1% the previous year. Year-to-date volumes also declined, falling by 8% compared to the same period in 2023.

In sharp contrast, hybrid-electric car registrations rose by 18.5%, with their market share increasing to 33.2%, up from 27.5% in November of 2023. This marked the third consecutive month in which hybrid cars outsold petrol vehicles.

ACEA reported that petrol car sales fell by 7.8% in November 2024. All four major markets saw declines, with France recording the largest drop at 31.5%, followed by Italy, where registrations decreased by 12.3%.

Germany and Spain saw more modest declines in petrol car sales, with drops of -5.4% and -2.3%, respectively.

A total of 266,115 new petrol cars were registered in November 2024, supporting a market share of 30.6%, down from 32.5% in the same month the previous year.

The diesel car market fell 15.3%, leading to a market share of 10.6% in November 2024. Overall, most EU markets reported decreases in diesel car registrations.
