Homemade Artisan Crackers (Stop Buying Store-Bought Series)

Welcome to my 2025 Stop Buying Store-Bought series where I challenge myself to learn to make items I typically buy at the store. Today, we’re making a homemade artisan crackers recipe! These crackers are SO tasty and ridiculously easy to make from scratch! You’ll never want to buy store-bought again!

Homemade Artisan Crackers (Stop Buying Store-Bought Series)

I Love Homemade Crackers!

Years ago, when I was a child, I have fond memories of my mom making crackers. I feel like the recipe was from our beloved More With Less cookbook.

I remember them being so yummy! But for some reason, I’ve just always bought crackers.

Maybe because they are often on sale? Or maybe because it just felt like making them would be a lot of work?

I’m not sure… but when someone suggested I try making them as part of the series, I knew I had to try it. And I was SO happy with how they turned out! In fact, I see myself making a lot more crackers in the future!

These would be delicious served with cheese or some kind of dip. They’d also make a great accompaniment to lunches (instead of chips) or as a side for a soup.

The best part is that you could try sprinkling them with lots of different things to change them up: sea salt, sesame seeds, other seeds, garlic seasoning, rosemary, Everything Bagel seasoning, or even cinnamon sugar!

Ingredients for Homemade Crackers

You won’t believe how easy the ingredients are for this homemade crackers recipe. It’s truly just four ingredients (and one of them is water!):

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt (kosher salt)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

How to Make These Homemade Crackers

1. Preheat oven to 400ºF.

2. Mix flour and salt together.

3. Add water and oil and mix into a sticky dough.

4. Place dough on a floured surface and knead briefly.

5. Divide dough in half and roll each half into rectangle shape.

6. Cover two cookie sheets with parchment paper and place rolled out dough on them.

7. Roll dough even thinner if you’d like crispier crackers (or keep it thicker if you prefer).

8. Cut dough into small squares using a pizza cutter.

9. Sprinkle with salt, sesame seeds, or leave them plain.

10. Bake in preheated oven for 12 minutes.

11. Stir/rearrange the partially-baked crackers and bake for another 8 to 10 minutes, or until crackers are light golden and crispy.

12. Let cool for at least 5 minutes.

13. Eat and enjoy!

Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
