Oxa joins Sunderland’s autonomous shuttle project

Oxa, an autonomous vehicle technology provider, has partnered with Sunderland City Council to deliver self-driving solutions as part of the city’s latest smart transport initiative. The project, known as SAMS, aims to showcase how autonomous passenger shuttles can improve urban connectivity while reducing environmental impact.

Central to the project is Oxa’s state-of-the-art autonomous Ford E-Transit shuttle, which will demonstrate how communities can be better connected to key destinations within Sunderland through innovative, sustainable transport solutions.

Oxa’s involvement highlights its expertise in autonomous technology for shared passenger transport and industrial logistics. The company’s self-driving software platform and services enable businesses and communities to benefit from safer, more efficient, and sustainable transport solutions.

Gavin Jackson, CEO of Oxa, said: “We’re proud to be part of the movement to radically modernise public transport in the UK. The project will demonstrate the potential of autonomous vehicles to create safe, efficient, and sustainable transport solutions. We look forward to collaborating with Sunderland City Council and other partners to bring this vision to life.”

SAMS forms a critical part of Sunderland’s wider smart city strategy, which focuses on using innovative technology to enhance urban living. Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, welcomed Oxa’s participation, stating: “Oxa’s expertise in autonomous vehicle technology is integral to our shared vision of creating a forward-thinking, sustainable transport system for the people of Sunderland.”

The initiative, supported by the Centre for Connected & Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), Innovate UK, and Zenzic, aims to test the practical application of autonomous vehicles in urban environments. Passenger feedback will be collected throughout the trial to ensure solutions align with community needs.
